POSITION SUMMARY

Port Discovery Children's Museum, one of the top Children's Museum in the United States and a top cultural institution in Baltimore's Inner Harbor, is seeking a Director of The Annual Fund. The Museum currently has an annual operating budget of approximately $4 million. Revenue growth will largely be derived from annual fundraising initiatives. The Director of The Annual Fund is a new position responsible for leading all aspects of planning, organizing, and implementing a comprehensive program of annual giving, including the direct mail program, the year-end appeal, upgrading select Annual Fund donors, memberships and other affinity groups, and tribute giving. The Director will work collaboratively within the Development Office and with other staff (and volunteers) in identifying and engaging new prospective Annual Fund donors. From time to time, the Director of The Annual Fund will be asked to support major fundraising initiatives for capital and endowment purposes. The Director will report to the Vice President of Development & Communications. In addition, this position will be responsible for the administration of Port Discovery's donor stewardship and donor recognition programs. The Director will be a key member of the six-person Development Office team.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES

THE ANNUAL FUND

  • Provide leadership for all aspects of The Annual Fund endeavors, including preparation, implementation, and operation of an annual workplan for the annual giving program.
  • Increase the fundraising capacity of Port Discovery by:
    • Developing direct mail and other appeals as well as fundraising materials for a wide range of Port Discovery constituencies.
    • Acquiring new annual fund donors via targeted appeals, acquisition appeals and other initiatives developed in working collaboratively with the organization's direct mail fundraising firm.
    • Developing fundraising strategies and methods to secure 100 percent Annual Fund participation in a timely manner each year by all members of the Board of Directors.
    • Working with the Vice President of Development & Communications to identify Annual Fund donors who have the fiscal capacity and potential interest to become prospective major gift donors.
    • Collaborating with staff and volunteers in developing communications and marketing resources to support fundraising initiatives.
  • Prepare regular reports on progress and projections in relation to goals for the annual giving program.

THE DONOR STEWARDSHIP AND DONOR RECOGNITION PROGRAMS

  • Implement and administer a comprehensive donor stewardship program that includes donor recognition, by:
    • Developing appropriate policies, procedures, and practices for stewardship and recognition of Port Discovery's donors at all levels of giving.
    • Communicating with donors about the benefits associated with their contributions both tangible benefits and the impact of their support on the beneficiaries of Port Discovery's programs and services.
    • Working collaboratively with the Vice President of Development & Communications in the development on naming opportunities.
    • Maintaining the publication of donor recognition (in print, on signage, digitally) throughout the year and via an annual honor roll of donors
  • Coordinate planning and administration of donor recognition events.
  • Establish recognition levels for donors at all levels.
  • Review all pledges/letters of agreement to ensure that the proposed donor recognition aligns with the donor's giving commitment.
  • Ensure that donors to the Major Gifts Initiative, and other fundraising endeavors, are offered appropriate recognition.


OPERATIONAL ACTIVITIES

  • Work collaboratively with the manager of the donor database CRM system to ensure that appropriate applications and modules are functional for both data entry and production of optimal reports and analytics regarding the Annual Fund.
  • Work collaboratively with other Development Office and Financial Office staff to ensure that all pledge reminders and gift acknowledgement are processed and sent to donors in a timely manner.
  • Ensure that all direct mail initiatives, Annual Fund asks, and tribute gifts are entered into the donor database CRM system in a timely and accurate manner, working collaboratively with the database manager to ensure procedures and protocols are maintained at all times.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Required: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. A Plus: Advanced degree.
  • 3-5 years (minimum) experience in fundraising/development for non-profit charitable organization, with a track record of success especially in Annual Giving programs and Stewardship programs.
  • Have knowledge and experience working with donor database management systems.
  • Have knowledge and experience in fundraising strategies and tactics, particularly annual fund, direct mail, one-on-one / face-to-face fundraising. Experience with major fundraising campaigns is a plus.
  • Must embrace the mission of the Port Discovery Children's Museum.
  • Possess a strong business acumen.
  • Possess the interpersonal and leadership skills to work with staff and volunteers.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Must be a self-starter and goal-driven individual capable of initiating and executing an array of fundraising efforts.
  • Well-organized, detail-oriented.
  • Display a positive and empathetic attitude.
  • Demonstrate presence, self-confidence, common sense, listening skills.
