The American Air Museum in Britain (AAMB) is seeking an enthusiastic and entrepreneurial person to manage the Museum's Major Gifts program from the United States. The Museum, although located in Duxford, England, is dedicated to preserving the memory of American Airmen who were stationed in the UK, and in particular, the 30,000 US air crew who perished in WWII flying missions from the UK. 

The American Air Museum is part of the Imperial War Museum (IWM) in Duxford. IWM is a family of five museums: IWM London; IWM North in Trafford, Greater Manchester; IWM Duxford near Cambridge; the Churchill War Rooms in Whitehall, London; and the historic ship HMS Belfast, moored in the Pool of London on the River Thames. The American Air Museum in Britain raises funding in the USA to support the work of the museum. The Major Gifts Officer position will work closely with many departments at the IWM and with the AAM's Membership Manager. 

This post is designed to maximize income for the AAM from individuals, companies and AAM members, as lifetime gifts, endowments, gifts in kind (i.e. stock) CGAs, IRAs and other giving vehicles. The post-holder will support the Executive Vice President, Phil Reed, in developing strategies for, and securing, income streams. The post is offered on a permanent basis. 

POSITION GOALS:

  • To secure funds for the AAM by managing a group of assigned, qualified donors (portfolio)
  • To maintain excellent relationships with current and new donors so that they are retained as continuing donors to the AAM and, wherever possible, upgraded in their giving and involvement
  • To research all other possible leads for securing major gift income for AAM.

 RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Working closely with and under the supervision of the EVP to implement a strategy to grow major gifts.
  • To develop the fundraising portfolio by increasing the pools of prospective donors.
  • Create a plan for each donor that will serve as a foundational communication and marketing plan for each person on the portfolio. Systematically and on a timely basis execute that plan so individuals on the portfolio are retained and upgraded.
  • Thoroughly research a group of direct mail members as potential high-end donors
  • Create individual goals for each person on the resultant portfolio, based on the donor's history of giving and the organization's knowledge of that donor's potential
  • Manage all aspects of the donor cycle for his or her portfolio:
  • Initiate contacts with potential leadership and major gift donors
  • Develop appropriate cultivation strategies for them, including working with the EVP of the AAM, AAM Board members and others
  • Move potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure
  • With the EVP of the AAM plan solicitations and a schedule, for the EVP, of one to one meetings with potential donors
  • Manage stewardship with donors
  • Ensure the highest standard of donor care; through effective stewardship, financial and administrative gift management, thanking, reporting and acknowledging.
  • Maintain contact phone, email, mail, in-person with portfolio of donors
  • Develop effective working relationships with colleagues and senior volunteers.
  • Work with program and communications staff to secure appropriate project information, including budgets, and create offers, proposals and asks that will be used with persons on the portfolio to secure gifts
  • Research other possible avenues for raising major gifts
  • Build and maintain systems to provide clear and effective reporting on managed relationships within the Major Gift portfolio, maintaining up to date records on donors.
  • Create monthly reports as required by management that accurately reflect portfolio activity and performance
  • Develop, plan, and execute events across the United States for prospects and donors
  • Perform other major donor activities as may be required
  • Position reports to the IWM finance department and to the AAM Executive Director

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • 5-7 years successful experience in fundraising
  • Must be a highly energetic professional with a track record of building donor relationships and closing gifts in the six-figure range
  • Ability to understand the needs and interests of leadership and major gift donors in order to develop relationships between them and the AAM
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated record of self-motivation
  • Ability to write a compelling case for support and to communicate this effectively through both face-to-face presentations and written copy.
  • Ability to manage people, process, deadlines and budgets while adhering to the policies and procedures of the AAM and ability to get along with peers, subordinates and management and maintain a positive and constructive attitude while solving problems
  • Ability to protect the mission, goals and values of the AAM
  • Successful experience in qualifying prospects and developing cultivation and solicitation strategies
  • Valid passport required. International travel to the UK is required, including an initial training period in the UK. Domestic travel to meet with donors, vendors, and consultants may also be required.
  • Physical location of the position is flexible and is open to a telework agreement
