The American Association of Geographers (AAG) is a nonprofit scientific and educational society founded in 1904. For more than 100 years the AAG has contributed to the advancement of geography. Its members from nearly 100 countries share interests in the theory, methods, and practice of geography, which they cultivate through the AAG's Annual Meeting, scholarly journals (Annals of the American Association of Geographers, The Professional Geographer, the AAG Review of Books and GeoHumanities), year-round programming and the online AAG Newsletter. The AAG promotes discussion among its members and with scholars in related fields, in part through the activities of its affinity groups and more than 70 specialty groups. The AAG seeks a talented and motivated candidate to serve as Policy Program Assistant. This position reports to the Government Relations Manager and will support the advocacy team on a variety of issues. The AAG's advocacy team mission includes championing the advancement of the discipline, serving as a voice for the needs and concerns of geographers, building relationships to strengthen the position of geography both within and outside of academic policy circles, and connecting our network of expert geographers with key decision-makers in state and federal government. The Policy Program Assistant will not only serve in a supportive role for the Government Relations Manager but will also contribute to planning annual campaigns and offer strategic thinking in a collaborative environment. The ideal candidate will be highly professional and demonstrate excellent communication and follow-through both internally with colleagues and externally when speaking on the organization's behalf.

Location: Hybrid Position (Washington, D.C. and Remote)

Program Assistant Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college
  • 2 or more years of experience working in a related position in public policy, grassroots / community organizing, stakeholder engagement, or advocacy
  • Excellent organizational, writing/editing skills, and attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Capitol Hill or state legislature experience
  • Extremely organized and self-motivated
  • Familiarity with academia and/or non-profit membership organizations
  • Undergraduate or postgraduate degree or coursework in geography / GIS
  • Experience with ArcGIS online or other mapping software

Program Assistant Responsibilities:

  • Drafting policy statements, sign-on letters, and content for the website & newsletter
  • Supporting the Government Relations Manager in strategic planning of policy campaigns and membership & stakeholder engagement
  • Tracking member engagement metrics and running database reports
  • Organizing the logistics of virtual webinars and other future advocacy programs and events
  • Attending briefings, hearings, and coalition meetings
  • Maintaining contact lists targeting and engaging external stakeholders
  • Assisting the advocacy team with research projects as needed
  • Additional administrative duties as assigned in support of the advocacy team
