Port Discovery Children's Museum, one of the top Children's Museum in the United States and a top cultural institution in Baltimore's Inner Harbor, is seeking a detailed and mission-oriented individual to join our Development team as our Grant Writer / Manager. The mission of Port Discovery is to connect purposeful play with learning.

In this role, you will help ensure financial support of the organization by developing and implementing a strategic fundraising plan to identify, cultivate relationships with, and generate grants to increase revenue for the museum. The successful candidate must have excellent communication and presentation skills, the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and a demonstrated commitment to excellence, innovation, teamwork and sustainable growth. Specialist consideration will be given to candidates with experience working with Federal grant requests and opportunities.

The Workweek for this position is currently Monday through Friday. However, flexibility is needed for special events and fundraising meetings. Most of the work for this position will be expected to be on-site.

The salary range for this position is $60k to $65k, based on experience.

Additional Responsibilities Include:

  • Conducts a full range of activities required to evaluate, prioritize, prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals and reports.
  • Works closely with the program staff to conceptualize, write and/or edit requests for funding, review program evaluation data, and carry out the documentation required for grant submissions and reports.
  • Achieves annual fund-raising goals for foundation, and other institutional giving, and supports the pursuit of government grants as a team effort.
  • Maintains professional relationships with foundation program officers.
  • Maintains and implements funding calendar, managing grants to ensure compliance with all grant requirements.
  • Works in partnership with the Senior Development Officer on grant tracking efforts related to prospecting, portfolio management, and grant lifecycle process.
  • Collaborate with key team members to draft/proof/edit assigned written content for a variety of fundraising and stewardship materials, annual reports, presentations, and other communications geared towards existing and prospective donors.

Position Requirements & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in business, non-profit management or related studies required.
  • Minimum of 4 years development experience required, with experience in proposal writing and managing institutional donors preferred.
  • Extra consideration provided to candidates with experience working on Federal grant requests and opportunities.
  • Knowledge of fundraising information sources and excellent oral and written communication skills required. Requires proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet software, knowledge of relational database management and familiarity with research techniques for fundraising prospect research.
  • Knowledge of contracts and agreements preferred.
  • Excellent organizational skills and effective interpersonal skills required.
  • Ability to work independently and calmly under deadlines are necessary qualities.
  • Possess the interpersonal and leadership skills to work with staff and volunteers.
  • Display a positive and empathetic attitude.
  • Demonstrate presence, self-confidence, common sense, listening skills.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

This is a largely sedentary role. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, bend, and reach with hands and arms. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Normal working hours for this position are Monday through Friday. However, flexibility is needed for special events and fundraising meetings, requiring some evening and weekend work. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
