The American Association of Geographers (AAG) is a nonprofit scientific and educational society founded in 1904. For more than 100 years the AAG has contributed to the advancement of geography. Its members from nearly 100 countries share interests in the theory, methods, and practice of geography, which they cultivate through the AAG's Annual Meeting, scholarly journals (Annals of the American Association of Geographers, The Professional Geographer, the AAG Review of Books and GeoHumanities), and the online AAG Newsletter.

The AAG promotes discussion among its members and with scholars in related fields, in part through the activities of its affinity groups and more than 70 specialty groups. The meetings and activities of our regional divisions provide the opportunity to network with colleagues near you.

Location: Hybrid Position (Washington, DC and Remote)

Position:

The Program Assistant will support new and ongoing projects related to careers and professional development and geography education. The Program Assistant will work closely with the Manager of Career Programs on a range of AAG projects that address some of the Association's core goals of delivering new and improved services to AAG members, advancing geography as a sustainable discipline, and expanding outreach to geographers working in government and private industry. The Program Assistant will also provide content and support for multiple webinar series on the AAG virtual platform focused on careers and professional development, and conduct research on the geographic/geospatial job market. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Supporting the launch of a new Guide to Geography Programs, an interactive, map-based directory of all geography, GIS, and closely related programs in the U.S., Canada, and Latin America
  • Maintaining a master list of all geography, GIS, and closely related programs in the U.S., Canada, and Latin America
  • Help organizing webinars and online workshops, recruiting panelists and session organizers, brainstorming topics, day-of logistical support, and compiling results and key insights from post-webinar surveys
  • Researching geography department alumni websites, identifying employers, inputting information, and maintaining a master list of employers known to hire geographers
  • Supporting the Disciplinary Data Strategic Insights (DDSI) team gathering primary and secondary data on the geospatial workforce
  • Providing organizational support for virtual and/or in-person career fairs and other careers/professional development events at AAG regional and annual conferences
  • Help developing new content related to careers and professional development for the AAG website such as brochures, tip sheets and other popular resources for geography departments
  • Additional administrative support duties as assigned

Qualifications:

This is an early-career position ideal for a recent graduate. Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Geography or related field required (advanced degree preferred)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and follow-through skills
  • Confidence to reach out to new stakeholders and make introductions
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work under the pressure of a quick timeline
  • Strong analytical-reasoning and problem-solving skills
  • Attention to detail
  • GIS skills preferred, but not required
