The American Association of Geographers (AAG) is a nonprofit scientific and educational society founded in 1904. For more than 100 years the AAG has contributed to the advancement of geography. Its members from nearly 100 countries share interests in the theory, methods, and practice of geography, which they cultivate through the AAG's Annual Meeting, scholarly journals (Annals of the American Association of Geographers, The Professional Geographer, the AAG Review of Books and GeoHumanities), and the online AAG Newsletter.

The AAG promotes discussion among its members and with scholars in related fields, in part through the activities of its affinity groups and more than 70 specialty groups. The meetings and activities of our regional divisions provide the opportunity to network with colleagues near you.

Hybrid Position (Washington, DC and Remote)

Position:

The Chief of Staff will assist the Executive Director in providing leadership and oversight for the Association's day-to-day functions and staff. This Chief of Staff will be part advisor, part gatekeeper, part problem solver, and part all-round strategic partner to develop strategy to meet organization goals. The role will have both internal- and external-facing responsibilities, ranging from human capital development (day-to-day management and professional growth) to project management.

The ideal candidate will handle complex situations and multiple responsibilities simultaneously, mixing long-term projects with the urgency of immediate demands. The applicant must also have the demonstrated ability to deal with highly confidential information and act as a liaison between the Executive Director and other constituencies, both internal and external. The applicant must exhibit the skills to collaborate with and achieve actionable results through others, the ability to build strong and sustainable relationships and the capability to interact within all levels of the Association.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Provides integrated analysis and strategic consultation on major issues impacting the organization.
  • Manages projects from beginning to end by tracking, communicating, and adapting as needed.
  • Supervises the Research and Data-focused staff team, providing guidance on work priorities and focus areas, setting goals and evaluating performance success and results.
  • Proactively identifies issues and supports effective communication. The Chief of Staff elevates issues about which the Director should be aware, and, conversely, represents the Director's position to constituents throughout the Association. By keeping both the Director and senior leaders informed of issues and initiatives, the Chief of Staff plays a critical role in the efficient flow of information across the Association.
  • Manage current facilities and help plan for future facilities' needs; direct other capital projects as needed.
  • Acts as part of a team ensuring successful board meetings in both preparation and completing follow-up assignments.
  • Executive project management: act on the authority of the ED to oversee projects that typically require cross-functional collaboration and resource allocation. Providing project planning and management for both departmental projects and initiatives.
  • Provide ad-hoc analysis and decision support.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Geography or related field (advanced degree preferred)
  • 6-8 years of experience in organizational administration, at least two years of experience in similar position
  • Experience leading complex projects successfully
  • Ability to manage logistics and to resolve challenging issues
  • Strong analytical-reasoning and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Attention to detail
