Port Discovery Children's Museum seeks an innovative, motivational, and strategic visionary to lead the delivery of interactive and virtual educational experiences, and to inspire learning through play and life-long curiosity.

Our mission is to connect purposeful play and learning, within our walls and beyond. General Description of the Job:

We are looking for a dynamic and visionary professional with strong leadership and excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to help advance the Museum as a statewide and national leader in the field of informal learning, children's museums, and early childhood education and to expand Port Discovery's commitment to fostering high-engagement/high-impact interactions for children and families.

This VP of Education and Learning Innovation will foster a culture of learning in the Museum that emphasizes interdisciplinary dialogue, imaginative use of learning and evaluation methods, creativity, and risk-taking. This person will be advocate for how the power of play can be used for authentic, developmentally appropriate transformative learning opportunities.

The Vice President shapes engagement for the Museum through the creation and evaluation of play-based learning programming for children within our permanent and traveling Museum exhibits as well as learning environments in non-Museum locations; educational programs onsite and online, in schools and in the community, and informs evaluation strategies. This position manages a talented group of full time and part-time professional employees. In addition, the Vice President will act collaboratively across departments in the design of interactive educational experiences that advance Port Discovery's mission.

The Vice President will report to the Museum President and will work collaboratively with members of the leadership team, including Guest Services, Marketing, Creative, Development, Exhibits, and Sales to ensure high quality innovative program design, development, and implementation and the highest quality museum experience for all audiences.

The workweek for this position is currently Monday Friday; however scheduled work hours will be adjusted at times according to the needs and events of the department and museum. Participation in certain special events, evenings, weekends, and holidays will be necessary at times.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • Extensive knowledge in early childhood development, family engagement, community and informal education for children via exhibits, programming and guest services.
  • Lead and manage teams tasked with shaping a portfolio of education and other experiences that convey knowledge in engaging ways.
  • Work collaboratively with members of the leadership team, including Guest Services, Marketing, Creative, Development, Exhibits, and Sales to ensure high quality innovative program design, development, and implementation and the highest quality museum experience for all audiences.
  • Develop framework for strategic learning, connecting grant making to ongoing strategy refinement and partnership with the program teams.
  • Collaborate externally, in particular with school districts, higher education, other nonprofits and for-profit organizations.
  • Assist program teams in defining their logic models/theories of change, reassessing priorities and refreshing their goals and objectives as needed.
  • Manage and Lead Education and Evaluation Teams:
    • Lead a group of talented professionals as a productive and smoothly functioning department by setting a clear vision and annual goals, providing on-going professional development and ensuring the team's skills are aligned with the Museum's strategic plan.
    • Develop and continuously refresh the Museum's educational philosophy and application of play-based learning grounded in research and ideally endorsed by academic advisors.
    • Ensure all educational activities have clearly defined developmental outcomes for children that are also communicated to parents and /adult caregivers in order to inspire the extension of play-based learning beyond the Museum experience.
    • Ensure evaluation of all learning environments and programs are meeting intended outcomes.
    • Ensure evaluation methodology is incorporated appropriately throughout the Museum.
    • Oversee development of public and education programs.
    • Fully assess the community need and market opportunity to sustainably grow initiatives to scale.
    • Identify, develop and execute key strategic partnerships.
    • Development and implement department budget in alignment with the museum's annual budget and budgetary commitments (e.g., grants, funding initiatives, operating expenses).
  • Coordination with Guest Services Team:
    • Integrate with Guest Services Team to maximize talents within organization.
    • Facilitate highest show quality standards.
  • Collaborate with Development Team to pursue funding on national and local levels, including federal grants.

Requirements / Qualifications:

  • Relevant Graduate (or Post Graduate) Degree required.
  • Extensive knowledge in early childhood development, family engagement, community and the 2Gen approach is essential.
  • Minimum of eight years' experience in positions of growing leadership scope, to include a demonstrated ability to manage and mentor direct reports and teams.
  • Successful experience in leading cross-disciplinary teams in the development of strategies and projects and in communicating educational program value to stakeholders, media and the public.
  • Minimum of five years strategic planning experience, including proven success in planning and developing new educational initiatives.
  • Experience managing complex projects involving the direct supervision and/or collaboration of multiple departments.
  • Demonstrated ability to take a new educational program from concept to implementation.
  • Active knowledge of community and educational organizations and initiatives locally in Baltimore, statewide and nationally required.
  • Experience with grant applications and implementation.
  • Comprehension and experience with formative and summative program evaluation and management required.
  • Excellent public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Computer proficiency with intermediate abilities using MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Expert interpersonal skills.

Work Location:

Currently, the Museum (located in Baltimore's Inner Harbor) is open on Saturdays and Sundays to the public, plus some holidays. The building is accessible to staff other days as needed.

Partial remote work is temporarily permitted due to COVID-19.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

Must be able to meet physical demands of job to include predominately sedentary / sitting aspect, plus occasional walking, standing, climbing, bending, kneeling and lifting / moving objects up to 25 pounds. Work is performed indoors, and the noise level is usually moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, fax machines, along with online tools for virtual programming and meetings.
