Port Discovery Children's Museum, one of the top Children's Museum in the United States and a top cultural institution in Baltimore's Inner Harbor, is seeking a Performance Specialist.

General Summary of the Job

The Specialist will provide engaging, high quality performances at Port Discovery and ensure an exemplary museum experience for all. The Specialist will research, create, implement, and evaluate innovative education performance activities, programs, and events for young children (birth through age 10) and their families that support Port Discovery's commitment to offer innovative, interactive, playful and engaging learning experiences. In addition to leading, facilitating, and engaging in performances implemented (either solo / on-person and/or small team), the Specialist will also conduct trainings and support grant-related work as it related to performance productions. In addition, the Specialist will develop and maintain pertinent community partnerships that will enhance the museum's offerings and mission. The successful candidate will be passionate about the theater and performing while igniting creative imaginations, curiosity, and engagement with museum programming.

The work week for this position is currently Sunday through Thursday but is subject to change according to department/ museum needs. Participation in special events, evenings, weekends and holidays will be necessary.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provides dynamic, engaging, high quality performances at Port Discovery, within the museum and as part of community outreach, including solo/one person performances.
  • Researches, creates, implements, and evaluates innovative educational performance activities, programs, and events for young children (birth through age 10) and their families that support Port Discovery's commitment to offer innovative, interactive, playful and engaging learning experiences.
  • Works closely with all other museum departments to create a cohesive team effort and exemplary museum experience.
  • Trains, mentors and supports staff on performance-based techniques and performance programs, from concept development to implementation through group trainings, individual trainings, modeling, coaching, and collaboration to ensure show quality performance and an exceptional museum experience.
  • Assists in the planning and coordination of the museum's performances, performance partners, and performance planning, including birthday party and overnight programs.
  • Participates in department budget development, strategic planning, and individual work planning activities.

Position Requirements & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Theatre Studies, Theatre Arts, Performing Arts or a related field required.
  • Minimum of 3 - 5 years of experience working in developing and delivering public performances, preferably with children and families, required.
  • Must have interest in working closely with children, parents, educators, and museum staff in developing and delivering an exceptional museum experience.
  • Museum experience is a plus.
  • Experience in program evaluation is a plus.
  • Must have excellent presentation, organizational, business writing and interpersonal skills.
  • Independent problem solving and decision-making skills are necessary for success.
  • A valid driver's license and reliable non-public transportation are required (for outreach activities).
